Object Manager

File Functions

The chapters below describe the feature set of File Functions page.

Import File

The Import File button will allow you to import all known file types in the Object Manager. The corresponding tool will open. If you e.g. open a fab file, the Action Worksheet will open. When opening a fib file the transport wizard will start etc.

Import Directory

If your object files are split up in a directory you can use the Import Directory function to import them at once in the following example, we have field files for a couple of tables in a directory.Press OK and the Object Manager will import all the files and open the corresponding tool, in this case the Compare Fields tool.

Split

The file function Split allows you to split up a single file containing multiple objects into multiple files each containing one object.

This will create a new directory with the name of the text file and saves all objects in separated files. This makes it a lot easier to analyse differences between two files.

*Note
Another way to get all your objects in separated object text files is to export them with Object Explorer. Go to Export > Export Split Text Files. You will be prompted for a directory and the objects will be exported to that directory.

Combine

To combine separated objects into one text file you can use the File Functions > Combine. You will be prompted for a directory and all the text files in that directory will be placed in a new text file with the same name of the chosen directory. This applies to both translation and object text files.

It is also possible to import all separated text files straight into NAV by selection the function File Functions > Import Directory. This will import all objects located in the chosen directory.

Compare File

Select File Functions > Compare File to open the windows file dialog to choose an object text file. This file will be compared with the same object residing in your database, using the compare executable as defined in the setup.

Compare Directory

Select File Functions > Compare Directory to open the Browse for Folder window to choose a windows directory containing object text files. These files will be compared with the same objects residing in your database, using the compare executable as defined in the setup.

Properties

Select File Functions > Properties to open the Update Properties in File window.

In File Name you enter the file for which you want to update the object properties. This can either be a objects text file or a OBP file. The result will be written to the file defined in New Filename. You can update Version List, Date/Time and Modified object properties by marking the corresponding check boxes and defining how you what to update these properties.

You can perform the following actions:

  • Update – Given an object text file all object properties will be updated as described above

  • Add – Given an object text file all object properties will be added from the file as defined in File Name, which can either be an object text file or an object properties (.obp) file

  • Remove – Given an object text file all object properties will be removed

  • Create OBP File – Given an object text file all object properties will be extracted and placed into an object properties (.obp) file

Press Execute which will result in the following.

Translations

Select File Functions > Translations to open the Translation File Functions window.

In File Name you enter the file for which you want to update the translations. The result is written to the file defined in New Filename.

You can perform the following actions:

  • Create Translation File – given an object text file all strings will be extracted and placed into a translation (.txt) file

  • Delete Captions – given the text file all captions will be deleted from the txt file

  • Add Captions – given a text file captions will be added from the file as defined in Captions File Name, which can either be an object text file or a translation file

*Note
Both File Name and Caption File Name can either be an object text file or a translation file.

Add Missing Languages will fill all the missing mandatory translation values with the base language specified in the setup.

Check Guidelines

Select File Functions > Check Guidelines to open the Check Guidelines File window. The function Check File gives the possibility to check objects in text format.

Select the file you want to check.

  • Create Results File – If you set Create Results File the comments will be published to a text file.

  • Create Correction File – If you set Create Correction File the Guidelines Tool will automatically correct (there where auto-correct is possible) the text file.

Press Execute, the results and corrected file are created.

Downgrade Objects

Since NAV2009 it is not possible to run your objects in older NAV versions. NAV will crash if you run your object in e.g. NAV5.0. The only way to import your objects in older versions is in text format. The Downgrade Objects tool let you downgrade your objects to older NAV formats. When you convert to e.g. NAV4.0 format the FINDSET en FINDFIRST will be replaced by FIND and non-supported elements and properties will be removed.

Select File Functions > Convert Objects to open the Convert Object window.

Press Execute.
